Control of eutrophication by silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) in the tropical Paranoá Reservoir (Brasília,Brazil): a mesocosm experiment

A mesocosm experiment was conducted to assess the impact of moderate silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) biomass (41 g m^–3 or 850 kg ha^–1) on the plankton community and water quality of eutrophic Paranoá Reservoir (Brasília, Brazil). Microzooplankton (copepod nauplii and rotifers <200 m), netphytoplankton (> 20 m), total phytoplankton biomass (expressed as chlorophyll-a) and net primary productivity were significantly reduced by silver carp. Apart from increased nitrogen in the sediment, nutrients and chemical properties of the water were not affected by fish presence. The observed improvements in water quality suggest that stocking silver carp in Paranoá Reservoir to control blue-green algae is a promising biomanipulation practice.

Phytoplankton composition and abundance of a central Amazonian floodplain lake

The phytoplankton community of Lake Camaleão, a smallfloodplainlake influenced by a large whitewater river, the Solimões, was monthlyinvestigated for the composition and abundance of itsphytoplankton. The seasonal influence of the floodregime on biomass, species richness and diversity, andits relation with physical and chemical factors(temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, electricalconductivity, total seston and inorganic nutrients)was analyzed and subjected to principal componentanalysis. Diversity was variable along the seasonalcycle: relatively high values were observed at the endof the dry season supported by high nutrientconcentrations. The phytoplankton was comprised of 262 taxa,with strong dominanceof euglenoids (81%). The three sample stations did not differamong each other, except in the dry season, due todata cluster in relation to theprincipal axis (1 and 2), explaining 63% of thevariation. Biomass accumulation as a function of lakearea reduction contributed to theseresults, indicating that the phytoplankton dynamicswere hydrology-driven.     

The Drosophila Gene abnormal spindle Encodes a Novel Microtubule-associated Protein That Associates with the Polar Regions of the Mitotic Spindle

abnormal spindle, a gene required for normal spindle structure and function in Drosophila melanogaster, lies immediately adjacent the gene tolloid at 96A/B. It encodes a 220-kD polypeptide with a predicted pI of 10.8. The recessive mutant allele asp¹ directs the synthesis of a COOH terminally truncated or internally deleted peptide of ~124 kD. Wild-type Asp protein copurifies with microtubules and is not released by salt concentrations known to dissociate most other microtubule-associated proteins. The bacterially expressed NH₂-terminal 512-amino acid peptide, which has a number of potential phosphorylation sites for p34^cdc2 and MAP kinases, strongly binds to microtubules. The central 579-amino acid segment of the molecule contains one short motif homologous to sequences in a number of actin bundling proteins and a second motif present at the calmodulin binding sites of several proteins. Immunofluorescence studies show that the wild-type Asp protein is localized to the polar regions of the spindle immediately surrounding the centrosome. These findings are discussed in relation to the known spindle abnormalities in asp mutants.     

Occurrence of subcutaneous zygomycosis (Entomophthoromycosis Basidiobolae) caused by Basidiobolus haptosporus with pulmonary involvement

A case of a two-year-old boy with multiple subcutaneous lesions caused by Basidiobolus haptosporus is presented.The child had also a non-toxic familial goiter and clinical and radiological features of a pulmonary illness. The pulmonary manifestations only disappeared with the treatment with potassium iodide. The authors think that the pulmonary lesions must have arisen by direct spread of the fungus from the subcutaneous lesions of the chest.     

Coordinate pretranslational control of cAMP-dependent protein kinase subunit expression during development in the water mold Blastocladiella emersonii.

The aquatic fungus Blastocladiella emersonii provides a system for studying the regulation of expression of regulatory (R) and catalytic (C) subunits of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA). Blastocladiella cells contain a single PKA with properties very similar to type II kinases of mammalian tissues. During development cAMP-dependent protein kinase activity and its associated cAMP-binding activity change drastically. We have previously shown that the increase in cAMP-binding activity during sporulation is due to de novo synthesis of R subunit and to an increase in the translatable mRNA coding for R (Marques et al., Eur. J. Biochem. 178, 803, 1989). In the present work we have continued these studies to investigate the mechanism by which the changes in the level of kinase activity take place. The C subunit of Blastocladiella has been purified; antiserum has been raised against it and used to determine amounts of C subunit throughout the fungus' life cycle. A sharp increase in C subunit content occurs during sporulation and peaks at the zoospore stage. Northern blot analyses, using Blastocladiella C and R cDNA probes, have shown that the levels of C and R mRNAs parallel their intracellular protein concentrations. These results indicate a coordinate pretranslational control for C and R subunit expression during differentiation in Blastocladiella.     

The differential sensitivity to a neurotigenic exposure of rat strains differing by the threshold of nervous system excitability]

The influence was studied of 15-days stressing on the appearance of stable neurosis-like state of rats lines, selected by the excitability of the nervous system. Unconditioned and conditioned components of behaviour were tested: pain sensitivity, behaviour in the open field, level of "anxiety", passive and active defensive avoidance. Differential reactivity was shown of the rats lines to prolonged stressing, depending on the genetically determined level of the nervous system functional state. Interlinear differences in dynamics of the development of neurosis-like state were established.
